A Bridge to Adulthood for Young Adults Who Learn Differently
OPTIONS Transitions to Independence is a post-graduate transition program designed for young adults who are ready to move beyond high school — but still need structured support to build independence, confidence, and direction.
OPTIONS serves as a bridge between adolescence and adulthood, helping students develop the academic, vocational, communication, and life skills necessary to succeed in college, work, and independent living.
When Traditional Paths Aren’t Enough
Many young adults leave high school knowing what they struggle with — but not yet knowing how to manage those challenges independently.
OPTIONS exists because:
-
Accommodations alone aren’t always enough
-
Intelligence does not guarantee independence
-
Success after high school requires skill transfer, not just instruction
We support students who need time, structure, and intentional coaching to translate their abilities into adult success.
Who We Serve
OPTIONS serves post-graduate young adults who may:
-
Have learning disabilities or learning differences
-
Experience executive functioning challenges
-
Benefit from speech & language support
-
Need coaching to build independence and self-advocacy
-
Be navigating anxiety, confidence, or transition readiness
Our students are often:
-
Capable, but inconsistent
-
Motivated, but overwhelmed
-
Ready for adulthood, but not yet fully prepared
-
Seeking a path forward that honors their strengths
OPTIONS is not about remediation — it’s about readiness and growth.
An Integrated, Individualized Model
OPTIONS uses an individualized, holistic approach that integrates:
-
Academics (College & Vocational Tracks)
-
Speech & Language support
-
Cognitive development (Arrowsmith, when appropriate)
-
Independent living skills
-
Executive functioning and self-advocacy
-
Real-world application
Students don’t just learn skills — they practice them daily, across settings, with consistent reinforcement.
Built on a Legacy of Understanding Learners
OPTIONS was founded as an extension of Brehm Preparatory School, a nationally respected program serving students with learning disabilities for more than four decades.
While Brehm supports students in grades 6–12+, OPTIONS extends that mission into post-secondary adulthood, carrying forward deep expertise while addressing the distinct demands of adult independence.
OPTIONS is its own program — with its own goals, structure, and expectations — grounded in a shared philosophy of understanding how individuals learn.
A Supportive Setting for Growth
Located in Carbondale, Illinois, OPTIONS provides access to:
-
A college-town environment
-
Community-based employment opportunities
-
Local colleges and universities
-
A structured yet real-world setting for independence
Students live and learn in an environment that balances support with authentic adult responsibility.
Individualization
No two students follow the same path. Support must fit the individual — not the system.
Dignity & Respect
Adulthood looks different for everyone. Independence is defined by meaningful engagement, not comparison.
Growth Over Time
Real change takes time, practice, and patience. Progress matters more than speed.
Families as Partners
We believe families play an important role in successful transitions to adulthood.
OPTIONS maintains strong communication through:
-
Regular updates and progress reporting
-
Parent and Family Conferences
-
Collaborative planning around goals and growth
Families are supported — not sidelined — throughout the journey.
Is OPTIONS the Right Next Step?
Every student’s transition journey is different. Our team works closely with families to determine readiness, fit, and next steps.
