Visit OPTIONS

Discover Your Path to Independence

Visiting OPTIONS is one of the most helpful steps families can take when deciding whether a structured post-secondary transition program is the right next step.

Our visits are designed to be thoughtful, informative, and supportive of where each student is in the transition process. Families leave with a clearer understanding of how OPTIONS supports independence, what student life looks like, and whether the program aligns with their young adult’s goals and readiness.

Our goal is not pressure. It is clarity for both families and the program.

Two Ways to Visit OPTIONS

Families are often at different stages when they begin exploring transition programs. To support that process, OPTIONS offers two types of visits.

Informational Visit

Informational Visits are designed for families who want an introduction to the program and campus environment.

These visits include:

  • a guided campus tour

  • an overview of the OPTIONS transition model

  • an introduction to academics, independent living, and student support

  • time to ask questions about daily life and program structure

Visits typically last 1.5 to 2 hours.

While student fit is not formally assessed during this visit, it is an excellent first step for families exploring whether OPTIONS may be a good match.

Admissions Interview

Admissions Interviews are designed for families who are ready for a deeper conversation about fit.

After reviewing application materials and relevant documentation, the admissions team schedules a virtual meeting to:

  • discuss the student’s history, strengths, and goals

  • explore appropriate program pathways and support levels

  • review readiness for a structured transition environment

  • determine whether OPTIONS appears to be a strong mutual fit

If alignment is confirmed, a full on-campus visit is scheduled.

It is approximately 25 minutes from campus and currently offers daily flights to Chicago O’Hare through Contour Airlines, with onward connectivity through partner airlines.

Major Airport Option: St. Louis Lambert International Airport

What to Expect From Your Visit

Families consistently say that visiting OPTIONS helps clarify:

  • readiness for independence

  • appropriate academic and living supports

  • the pace and structure of the program

  • whether the environment feels right for their student

Visits are not high-pressure. The goal is to help families understand the program clearly and make a thoughtful decision.

Why Families Visit Before Deciding

A website can explain the program, but an on-campus visit helps families experience the setting, ask specific questions, and better understand what everyday life at OPTIONS looks like.

During a visit, families often gain a better sense of:

  • how support gradually decreases as independence grows

  • how students balance academics, daily living, and recreation

  • how the Carbondale environment supports real-world transition

  • whether OPTIONS feels like the right next step
